Social Club. During the past few weeks matters have been very quiet in connection with the activities of the Y.M.C.A. social club, and at the meeting of the management committee held on Thursday evening it was decided to arrange to temporarily close the billiard room and kitchen portions of the dub rooms. Party for Tennis Club. A large number of supporters of the Tennis Club assembled at the home of Miss E. Kirk on Tuesday evening when a party was held in aid of the funds of the club. The evening was spent in games, competitions of many kinds and dancing on the spacious lawns. The function was a great success, and much enjoyed by all who attended. Road Racing. Considerable public interest was aroused on Saturday afternoon, when a cycle race was promoted. A total of eight competitors left the post office at their respective handicaps for a race to Walton and back, via the Richmond Downs and Wairere settlement, a distance approximating eleven miles. The winner proved to be H. Tompkins, who covered the distance in 31mins 45secs. A trophy had also been awarded for the rider registering the fastest time in the race, which was won by E. C. Moore, his time being 31mins 20secs. Formation of Club. Following the successful race on Saturday afternoon and the evidence of the public interest in cycle road racing a meeting was held on Tuesday evening to consider the proposal to form a cycle club in Waharoa. Mr. J. Keeley, who had been instrumental in promoting Saturday’s race, was elected chairman, and asked those in attendance at the meeting to fully discuss the project before arriving at a decision. Some doubt existed regarding the advisability of establishing either an amateur or professional club, and eventually the unanimous opinion favoured a local cycle club which would conduct races for trophies only, thus avoiding the members being debarred from competing in either branches of the sport in other centres. The formation of a club of this description was decided upon, and the following officers were elected:— Patron, Mr. C. H. Clinkard, M.P.; president, Mr. Jos. Keeley; vice-pre-sident, Mr. A. M. Stewart; committee, Messrs. J. Keeley, A. M. Stewart, J. W. Townes, H. A. Lewis, H. E. Salter, G. Cobb, R. Murdoch, and O. L. Lasenby; timekeeper, Mr. J. W. Townes; handicappers, Messrs. Keeley and Salter; judge, Mr. A. F. East; secretary, Mr. O. L. Lasenby. The committee was instructed to prepare a set of rules to be considered at a later general meeting of the club’s supporters.
