Sunburn has covered (and still will cover) such a multitude of skins that it can never be expected to fade quietly away merely because summer suns will set., Will sunburn continue? If it continues, will it be smart? It it hasn’t proved successful in individual cases, what can be done about it? Women who have acquired a tan are not going to let it slip away until they arp perfectly certain what smart opinion will be on the matter. Various different factors figure in the continuation of this vogue, but first, and most fundamental, is the matter of becomingness. The tremendous popularity of sunburn is due to the fact that many women have found it the most becoming thing that ever happened to them. And no matter how many people may say “ I’m sick of all this sunburn business,” tljose devotees to whom a sunburn is dazzlingly becoming will continue their, brown and beautiful way following the sun around and establishing sunburn as part of the mode.

Given the fact then that sunburn will continue in chic, what determines who shall continue it, and how ? Some women who have acquired smooth, even coats of tan have found to their surprise that the effect was not nearly so becoming as they had expected, and it would be a mistake if they continued to cultivate it, for certainly it will never be necessary to burn to be smart. The sweeping assumption that brunettes and sunburn combine well has proved wrong in many cases. Many brunettes are charming with tanned skins, of course, but given a very dark brunette and a very dark tan, you have an Indian or a negroid effect that is more startling than pleasing. There is always a danger of overdoing a tan. Many women have become so enchanted with the success of their sunburn that they have allowed it to become darker and darker, until all its charm is lost. Blondes have burned far more successfully than might be expected. A light skin frequently takes a golden brown that is the loveliest tone sunburn can acquire. It is the golden brown blonde who can wear black with ravishing effect. But the blonde must look to her eyebrows if she goes in for sunburn. When sunburn has proved becoming and the sunburned one wishes to retain her colour, what recourse has she ? She has two..alternatives. One, to follow the sun around to warmer climes; the other, the use of the many harmless attractive suntan preparations, more of which I will tell you later.
