POLICE RAIDS.
MATAMATA ARRESTS. On Bookmaking Charges. An unsuspicious-looking individual “ blew ” into Matamata recently with sufficient information under his hat” to direct his footsteps to a couple off business premises, where he took as many “ doubles ” as he could. On the tick of 11.30 a.m. on Thursday arrests on bookmaking charges were made in Hamilton, Morrinsville. Matamata, Rotorua and Te Puke. At Matamata two well-known business men were gathered in by the police and brought before Messrs. W. A. Turkington and T. J. Underwood. J.’sP., on charges of keeping common gaming houses. The arrests were made simultaneously by Sergeant Mathieson, of Hamilton, and Constable Connor, of Matamata, and the police asked that accused be remand- ' ed until January 17. This was granted and bail was allowed in the sum of £25 and one surety of £25 each.
Mr. F. W. Hutchison appeared for both defendants, and the Bench took the most unusual cdurse of suppressing the names of the accused.
