LOCAL AND GENERAL.

The Press will K not be published during the Christmas and New Year holidays. The next issue will be on Thursday, January 9.

A special sheep train of 57 waggons, including 31 loaded at Morrinsville, drew out of Morrinsville station on Sunday evening on a direct run to Westfield. All day Sunday the 2500 lambs were being loaded at Morrinsville station, and the heavy rain for several hours, made the task of the men a most unenviable one. Farmers mention that the great increase in sheep in the Morrinsville district during recent years is largely due to topdressing. Land is now carrying three times as many sheep as it did a few years ago.

A little story of school experiences was related by Mr. D. M. Rae, principal of the Auckland Training College, at Thursday's prize - giving function. Once there was a little boy who wrote “ I have went—” in his composition, so his teacher ordered him to stay after school and write “ I have gone—” a hundred times. This done, and the teacher not being visible, the boy added a note stating, “ Please, Teacher, as you were nowhere about I have went home.” This was a source of great merriment to Mr. Rae’s audience.

The first draft of fat lambs for the season from the Matarawa Land Company’s run at Tokoroa was dispatched last Friday, and the grading returns were most satisfactory.

At a meeting of the Waikato East Lawn Tennis Sub-Association held last week, the resignation of Mr. A. C. Thompson, the secretary, was accepted with regret.

Season’s greetings were extended to Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., by Messrs J. R. O. Lochhead and Mason at the sitting of the court on Thursday. Mr. Paterson reciprocated the good wishes.

A case of a summons being served on the wrong person was revealed during the sitting of the Magistrate’s Court at Putaruru on Thursday. Both parties possessed the same name and initials, and the lady on whom the summons was served successfully proved\that she was not the person who had contracted the debt. The search for the real debtor will continue.

A pleasant function marked the Putaruru Girl Guides’ entertainment of mothers and friends on Saturday, when Mrs. Dodson, a former captain, was presented with a handsome rose bowl. Lieutenant L. Miller made the presentation, and in doing so referred appreciatively to the excellent services rendered to the company by Mrs. Dodson. The recipient returned thanks.

'Representatives from various parts of the parish joined with local worshippers at St. Paul's Anglican Church on Sunday evening, when a special Christmas service was conducted by the vicar, the Rev. E. H. Atkey. The fact that the night was a particularly stormy one did not prevent a large congregation from being present. The whole service was in keeping with the season, and at its close those present adjourne.; -to the Presbyterian Hall, . where a cup of tea and social intercourse was partaken of.

The Putaruru Guide Company entertained parents and Committee ladies at a party on Saturday afternoon. The Guides gave a most enjoyable programme of songs and elocutionary items, interspersed with country dances and competitions. After the Guide ceremonial, Mrs. Dodson, a former captain, presented second-class badges to Misses Jean Sneddon, Gladys Vosper, Molly Baldwin, Zen'a Miller, Carlie Scott, Winifred Baldwin, Vera Miller, Alison Hutton and Kathleen Baldwin, mach lady present was the recipient of a present.
