FIRST SILK STOCKINGS.
Silk stockings were introduced to England from Spain, and were worn by men and women alike—when they could get them. In 1560 we find Sir Thomas Gresham writing from Antwerp to Sir William Cecil, Elizabeth’s Minister:—“l have written into Spain for silk hose both for you and my lady, your wife.” These silk hose of black were soon afterwards sent by Gresham to Cecil. Mp Up to the time of Henry VIII. (ac- ) cording to a contributor to the Newcastle “ Weekly Chronicle ”) hose * were made of ordinary cloth. Henry's were formed of yard-wide taffeta. On rare occasions he obtained a pair of silk hose from Spain. Hi 3 son, Edward VI., was not more fortunate. Sir Thomas Gresham got him ** a pair of long Spanish silk stockings,” which so impressed Stow, the chronicler, that he speaks of them as a great present.”
