Making Use of the Gears.
The gear box is a very important unit in a motor car. It costs a fairly large sum to design and construct, and the buyer of a car pays for it in the price of the vehicle. Yet some drivers seem loth to use it. They appear to think that it is somewhat humiliating to have to use a low gear when surmounting a steep grade. Many motorists too often at-
tempt to climb every hill on top gear, regardless of whether it would
not be better to use the second gear, fairly early too. With the wonderful flexibility of the modern six-cylinder engines most of the hills on our roads can be taken on the run, but there are times when it is much better by changing into second gear for the engine to be given assistance and the tyres saved from laceration, especially when the road surface ia rough, and the top gear speed cannot well be maintained. The boast of some car sellers that their cars are “ top-gear ” cars has led many beginners to believe that the top gear may be used at all times.
