Te Whetu.
Women’s Institute. A very successful meeting of the Te Whetu Women’s Institute was held last week in Bart’s Hall, when Miss Spencer, the Dominion organiser, and Miss Large were present, they having travelled all the way from Napier to be present. A quantity of business was dealt with and one new member, Mrs. James Randell, elected, bringing the number to sixteen.
The roll call, “My favourite Christmas cake,” afforded some useful recipies. It was decided that each member plant a row of potatoes and that these form the subject of a competition in March, and that the potatoes grown be sold and the proceeds given to the federation funds. Miss Spencer then addressed the meeting, congratulating the institute on the progress it had made. She also showed a large number of very interesting ana beautiful articles made by members of other institutes and demonstrated the making of a very dainty posy. Members each made one for themselves, and it was decided that the competition for the December meeting should be for the prettiest posy.
Miss Large then sang to a delighted audience, and supper provided by the hostesses for the evening, Mrs. E. Randell and Miss Jefferson, provided an interval for talk. A competition, “ The best article made from waste material,” .was won by Mrs. E. Randell, Miss Ina Jamieson being second, the latter have made a rather original doll. The president, Mrs. Lake, moved a very hearty vote of thanks to the visitors for their kindness in having come so far and for their very instructive visit. All agreed that this had been the most interesting gathering that had been held since the institute was formed. Dr. Henderson will address the next meeting.
