MATAMATA RACE MEETING.
A PURELY HACK FIXTURE. Change Decided On. The annual meeting of the Matamata Racing Club decided on Saturday, after very little discussion, to. make this season’s fixture a purely hack meeting. Mr. J. W. Anderson (chairman), in introducing the subject, recalled that the stipendiary steward suggested after the last meeting that the Matamata Cup be made a hack cup, and that he thought the club would be better off as a result of the change. Mr. Vincent, supported the suggestion, as he thought the club would gain by the move. Mr. Price suggested the matter be left with the executive. Mr. Vincent endorsed this view.
Mr. Payze then moved an amendment that the matter be settled by the meeting that night. Mr. Earl Johnston seconded the amendment. The chairman pointed out that the programme had always been arranged by the committee. Mr. Payze: I want to decide whether it is to be a hack meeting or not. i The amendment was then put and carried with but one dissentient voice. As the motion it was carried unanimously. Messrs. Price and Payze moved that the meeting be a straight-out hack meeting, and this was carried, Mr. Earl Johnston being the only dissentient. Mr. Earl Johnston remarked that the cup field last year was small, but it was the best race of the day and the betting had been good. If they made it a hack cup he felt the other .mile races would not be well supported. The chairman remarked that the motion had been already carried, and no further discussion took place.
