PUTARURU CLUB. Rink Competition. During the week-end eight rinks of the Putaruru Bowling Club took part in a full rink competition, for trophies donated by the president and vice-president. The tournament provided some exciting games and a pleasant day’s sport. Members are indebted to the president (Mr. A. G. Leggatt) for the enthusiasm displayed in connection with the tournament. It must have been gratifying to that gentleman and the committee to see such a large gathering of trundlers. In view of the fact that the. club has not been strong numerically in the past, tbe gathering of 32 active members was extremely gratifying. Despite unfavourable weather conditions, the greens played extremely well. Luncheon was served in the pavision in true “ campers’ ” style, and a greatly appreciated afternoon tea was served by the ladies. All members voted the tournament a decided success. The two champion skips reached the finals of their respective sections with three wins and no losses. In this connection some of the younger skips had a too formidable task, but despite this they never became disheartened. Whilst the play benefited quite a number of new players, signs were evident that coaching in the art of delivering the bowls and the proper method of maintaining the correct balance was necessary. There is no doubt that the older members would be willing to give this instruction to the novices.

The first challenge match of the season for the Goldfields Stars was played at Matamata on Saturday, Morrinsville being the challengers. Owing to the absence of F. Livingstone the holders’ rink was rearranged, Oates going to third and J. W. Sirilpson going in as lead. After a very keen game Morrinsville were winners by 20—15. The rinks were:—-

Matamata.—J. W. Simpson, J. McIntyre, A. Oates, G. Stewart (s). Morrinsville. —A/ G. Yardley, N. Howie, S. H. Cornish, R. Branch (s). A’high wind made the play tricky, but the sportsmanship of the holders’ skip (G. Stewart) was demonstrated by his special request for the most sheltered rink so that the test would be as fair as possible to both teams. Matamata started with a 1 but at the seventh head the challengers were leading by four points, B—4. Matamata gradually overhauled their opponents to get ahead on the 12th. It was low scoring to the 19th, at which stage Matamata were three in front. On this head, however, Morrinsville secured a 5, mainly through a good shot by the visiting third, Cornish. A 2 on the next and a 1 on the last gave the challengers victory by 20—15. The lay of the bowls on the last head was useless to Stewart, who required four to tie and hold the trophies. He tried to kill the head but struck front bowls and went down by five.
