WORK IN MATAMATA COUNTY.

ENGINEER’S REPORT. At the November meeting of the Matamata County Council the following report on Public Works grants was submitted by the engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald:— Public Works Grants. Grants for the current year were made known about a week ago, and the amount available to the council is £4325, a good deal of which has already been lifted since last March. Supplementary votes have not yet been published. Those votes which more particularly affect riding accounts at the present moment are as follows:

Matamata Riding.—Okauia South, nearly complete and will require about £SO more from riding funds. Peria Riding. Buckland road, scheme not yet finalised, but two miles from Robinson’s to Libeau’s may cost about £IBOO, and may result in Peria riding finding £450, part of which might be timed to come into next year. Further expenditure on Gunn’s and Matai roads to be considered later in the season.

Tirau Riding.—Buckland road, being on the boundary between Tirau and Peria, both ridings contribute like amounts.

Te Poi Riding.—Rangitanuka, £4OO spent upon ‘extension of shingle at northern end will cost the riding £2OO.

Okoroire Riding. ■— Okoroire-Ta-papa, completion of the metal on this road with Waihou shingle from the back of Somerville’s farm will cost the riding about £640, portion of which will extend into next year. Putaruru Riding. Lichfield-Pu-taruru, this scheme is being finalised and will cost the riding between £6OO and £7OO, of which part will probably fall into next year. Tokoroa Riding. McKinnon’s road, this work cannot be put in hand until deviations are legalised. It will cost the riding £llO. Maungatautari Riding. Stoke’s road and Luck-at-Last road are not yet finalised, particularly as to local finance. Probable cost to the riding this year will be about £2OO, the remainder coming from special loan or other local contribution from the land served.

If reasonable progress is made •with the foregoing works, and if allowance be made for Waihou bridge, £144 as well as moneys already lifted the total grants claimable this year will be about £5789, of which all or part of the excess over £4325 will not be refunded until next year. It is not likely that the Department will authorise the whole of these works to be put in hand pt once.

The following new proposals have been or are about to be submitted, and require the special resolution of the council guaranteeing maintenance :

1. Buckland: Metal two miles from Robinson’s to Libeau’s 10ft x 9in with Allport’s shingle; £1836. 2. Okoroire-Tapapa: Completion of metalling with Waihou shingle, 12ft x Bin, at inclusive cost of £2452. 3. Lichfield-Putaruru: Metal from town boundary to Dukeson’s road, 10ft wide with 6in rhyolite and 3in Waihou shingle at cost of £1325.
