There is a general shortage of pigs in Waikato, and this has been reflected in a very keen demand and high prices at the sales. The shortage is attributed partly to the operations of the Pig-marketing Association and other exporting organisations and to the fact that a large number of farmers disposed of their sows, and breeding is consequently not so general as it was a year ago. Again, the bobby calf industry has also had a marked effect. Far fewer calves have been reared and consequently there is at this time a surplus of skim milk, which, if not fed to pigs, would otherwise be wasted. As a result a demand has set in for store pigs, and the supply being limited, prices have soared. i
