LAKE ARAPUNI.
GOVERNMENT CONTROL, favoured by Putaruru Angler. The proposal (subsequently with--1 drawn) by the Government to make ’ regulations for the control of Lake Arapuni was brought under the notice of a prominent member of the Putaruru branch of the ■ Auckland Acclimatisation Society by a representative of the Press with a view to ascertaining Putaruru feeling on the subject. The angler said the society had no jurisdiction in the matter, and as had to control the lake he the Government was the -Lproper body to do so, and subject to certain reservations there could be no legitimate opposition to the proposal. There should be no commercialisation of the lake, and it was pointed out that on the banks of the upper stretches of the lake the teatree grew to a great size ; this would be of great commercial value, but if this was allowed the danger of it getting out of control while being towed down the lake was apparent to all. In view of there being no definite information sis to the exact nature of the restrictions it was difficult to hxpress a definite opinion, but as far as could be seen the Government was the right body to control the lake.
