LEARNING FROM THE DUCE.
MUSSOLINI’S HOUSING METHODS. / Preparations have been completed for a housing convention which will enable authorities from various parts of England and Scotland to learn something of the housing methods adopted by Mussolini. Although the convention, which is to be held in Rome and later in Milan, is an international one, the British delegates to the number of, roughly, seventy, will link it with an independent tour of the larger Italian cities, where every opportunity is. to be given to them of seeing the remarkable manner in which' the Duce has tackled the problem of accommodating his people in the finest surroundings that means can afford. So completely has he probed the difficulties associated with the price and quality of building materials, the co-operation of State and private enterprise, the financing of local schemes on a national basis, the lay-out of communities, the supply of playing fields and green belts, and the adaptation of the latest domestic lab-our-saving devices to the needs of smaller houses that Italy may in many respects be regarded as a pioneer. The convention itself will begin on 7th September, and papers will be given on behalf of Britain by speakers from England and Scotland, who will explain the progress of housing in Britain and the peculiar difficulties i ,v ' respect of re-planning and the subsidy with which the country is faced.
