ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD.

MRS. TOMS. OF CHRISTCHURCH.* Not many residents can boast of Jiaving lived in the reigns of five British monarchs. This is the record * of Mrs. Sarah Ann Toms, an inmate of the Jubilee Home, Woolston, who celebrated her 100th birthday on Labour Day. Despite her advanced years, her mental faculties are still keen. She is able to walk about, can boast of hardly having had a day’s illness in her life, and looks like battling on past the century mark. She has a keen sense of humour. Mrs. Toms was born in India in 1829, during the reign of George IV. Her father, John Doughney, was a soldier in a British regiment in India, where Mrs. Toms spent many years.

The Governor-General, Sir Charles Fergusson, during a visit to the Jubilee Home early this year, chatted with Mrs. Toms, whose recollections of life in India are most vivid. She also discoursed enthusiastically on army life. One of the greatest memories of her life was the crowning of Queen Victoria. Mr. and Mrs. Toms came to New Zealand from England in the ’sixties. They lived in Andover street, Merivale, and later in Lin wood. Mr. Toms predeceased his wife many years ago.
