Envy the birds ! North, south, east or west—it makes little difference—they need not shop, pack nor buy tickets. Travelling for us is a more complicated affair, but it need not be the ordeal that many people make it. There are ways and means of acquiring what might be called “ travellers’ chic ” which will make any trip, no matter how complicated, a dream of comfort and a joy to anticipate. In these nomadic days, a trip, instead of being an event that explodes like a bombshell in the midst of a quiet family circle, is, in nine cases out of ten, an ordinary occurrence. There is no standing still to-day. Everything is moving. Some travel to the mountains, some travel to the seaside, some to take a cure. Others go abroad. Some travel ligjitly and unaccompanied, with a minimum of luggage. Others travel like a caravan, with a retinue of endless baggage. But, however you go, if all of this is to be pleasant, the secret lies in having what you want when you want it. The right bags and careful packing will keep scattered powder and broken bottles from - marring a pleasant arrival. Fitting the clothes to the journey is just as important as fitting them to the occasion.
As to your travelling costume. Tweeds have become classic. A long coat and skirt worn with a jersey or simple crepe de chine blouse is an all-year travel uniform. Travelling during December and January is apt to be hot, especially if you go north, and a frock of crepe de chine ‘ will
be charming, cool and smart. Some i of the printed crepe de chines, par- [ ticularly the small patterned variety, t are delightful and well adapted for the traveller whose wanderings take her to warm climes. Hats with small brims usually look smartest when travelling, although turbans are very chic and can be ; packed into any corner of one’s suit case. The problem of keeping one’s 1 hands clean is solved by gloves, and i they had better be of washable suede rather than kid. No matter how you get there, your eventual destination will probably be an hotel. So a word on making your hotel room more comfortable. It can be done quite simply. If you are to settle down and remain for any length of time a charming quilt and pillow covers will help tremendously. One’s pictures in attractive frames, and toilet articles on the dressing table, combined with flowers and books, will change the entire aspect of the room.
