"PAPER” ROAD.

THROUGH TOKOROA. Question of Dedication. In a letter to the Matamata County Council, Messrs. Melville, Ferner and Brown, solicitors, of Auckland, stated on behalf of the N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd., Putaruru, that they were surprised at the council being concerned with a proposal to dedicate a road through Tokoroa No. 1 block giving access to the Crown lands. The N.Z. Perpetual Forests, Ltd., as owners of the adjoining land, strongly objected to the dedication of the road and they claimed that the suspension of the proposed dedication would be in the public interest, as well as in the interests of the ratepayers of the riding. The dedication will saddle the riding ratepayers with the expense of maintenance without any possible benefit to anyone for years to come. The matter is being taken up with the Government and the council were I asked if the Department consented I to an abandonment of the dedication, j would they be prepared to remain j neutral.

Cr. Cox stated that the road line was laid off when the land was cut up. The sqlicitors were, of course, objecting to any road going through the property amongst the trees which was not a private one.

The engineer stated that the road formed by the Forestry Company did not follow the line laid off. This particular road might possibly be wanted at a later date, as it connected up with dedicated roads leading into Rotorua. Cr. Allen: It is only the future that has to be considered. If there is a possibility of it being required we should not remain neutral.

Cr. Cox: There are so few roads there that we can not go and close the road without some guarantee that it will not be wanted. The council decided to reply that it would further consider the matter when it had some evidence that the road would not be wanted. On the motion of the chairman, it was decided to write to Mr. M. J. Galvin, senior inspector, Hamilton, and ascertain his opinion on the need for the road in the future.
