MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.

OCTOBER MEETING. General Business. The October meeting of the Matamata County Council held at Tirau on Friday was attended by Crs. J. W. f Anderson (chairman, Tirau), J. Bruce (Karapiro), W. S. Wilson <Matamataj, K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), W. H. Allen (Okoroire), P. Dee (Te Poi), J. Moir (Peria) and A. T. Morriss (Putaruru). Also in attendance were Messrs. C. F. E. Barton (clerk) and M. E. Fitzgerald (engineer) .

.Water Powers. Ik. The Department of Internal r Affairs wrote enclosing ah extract from the New Zealand Gazette containing Order-in-Council conferring on the county council certain powers of borough councils with respect to water works. The council decided that suitable by-laws be prepared. Te Poi Loan. The Local Governments Loans Board wrote sanctioning loan of £330 f” Omahine-Te Poi No. 2 loan supplementary loan 1929. The clerk stated the terms were 5i per cent interest with 2i per cent sinking fund, the term of the loan being ten years. Cr. Dee expressed his satisfaction with the terms of the loan, as though the period was a short one the total did not amount to much and it settled an outstanding question. The usual resolutions in connection with loan requirements were then passed by the council, the rate to be struck being one-fifteenth of one penny. Edmeades’ Road. The Lands and , purvey • Departrment, in reference to G. W. Edmeades application for a permanent tenancy of the reserve adjoining sec--1 tion 114, block 7, Patetere north, .noted that the council desired the road south of the reserve to be retained to provide access to gravel deposits. Under the circumstances no action will be taken by the Land ' Board to dispose of the road and the selection of the northern portion has been withheld. —Received. Matamata Water.

The Matamata Town Board applied for permission to extend the existing water main in Waharoa road west from the point where it terminates along the county road to the boundary of K. R. Buckley’s property. The letter asked that urgency be - accorded the matter. —Granted subject to the usual conditions. The Hungahunga Drainage Board wrote stating that they had not deepened the drain on the Peria road, under the culvert for the last ten years, so that the present state of the culvert was not due to the action of the board. The board had no intention of extending the drainage in the future. It was pointed out that if it were not for the drainage carried out by the board, Station road would be flooded during the wet season, a benefit for which the council did not contribute. The engineer stated that the culvert was rotten and would have to be re-built. From the council’s point of view they were not concerned with drainage; a 9-inch pipe put in at a cheap depth would do all that was required. The council decided to adhere to its previous decision disclaiming liability.

Hinuera Scholars.

The Hinuera School Committee requested something to be done to the footpath in front of the Hinuera school. In wet weather the children had the option of getting their feet wet by going on the footpath or else walking on the road in the way of the traffic. —Work to be carried out.
