Two dogs were fighting savagely in a main street of Wanganui recently when one turned tail and fled across the street. The other raced after it, and made a savage headlong snap at it as it twisted suddenly on the footpath, but missed. So grfeat was the force of its rush that when it missed, it crashed through the window of a Chinaman’s fruit shop. John rushed to the door crying loudly “ Whaffor!” only to see a dog streaking down the street evincing symptoms of terror.

Several specimens of pertified forest growth have been secured by a prospector who is engaged upon a search for mineral deposits in the depth of hilly country to the east of Dargaville. The most remarkable of these is a child’s toy pistol, which is firmly embedded in a mass of petrified kauri leaves, twigs, bonini and Maire leaves. The finder’s theory is that the pistol may have been given to a Maori child by whalers or other early visitors to these shores. With other petrified specimens, the pistol was discovered in the recesses of a cavity 60 feet below the surface of the ground through which flows a subterranean stream.
