A CHECK ON TYRES. , s How to Save Money. There is only one way to check up on tyre pressure, and that is not by kicking the tyre with a judicial toe. Four minutes with a tyre gauge once a week will add about one quarter to the mileage of tyres, according to the test just cited. If a motorist uses eight casings a year he should have the price of two tyres by this simple precaution. Last year tyre manufacturers in the United States made nearly 60,000,000 casings, valued at retail more than £200,000,000. Since tests show variations in’tyre mileages as high as 40 per cent, the needless waste can be conservatively estimated at millions of pounds. Observance by all drivers of a few simple rules of tyre care would reduce the waste to a minimum. Paradoxically, the more the car is improved the harder it seems to be on tyres. Four-wheel brakes now stop a car at twice the speed in half the time required a few years ago.
