FARMERS’ COUNCIL MEETS.

ROTORUA DISTRICT. Meeting in Matamata. The sub-provincial meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union for the Kotorua district was held in Matamata on Tuesday, when the following members attended : Messrs. W. H. Allen, chairman (Tirau), A. J. Tong, T. H. Prowse, H. Rollett and F. Bowler (Matamata), B. Dennis and J. W. Amoore (Tirau), P. Melrose (Walton), E. Gubb (Okoroire), L. M. Nicklin (Putaruru), A. E. Robinson, secretary (Auckland).

Organisation. On the motion of Messrs. Nicklin and Gubb the question of organising .the Rotorua district was deferred until the next meeting, to be held at Tirau. British Farmers. ~s • On the motion of Messrs. Nicklin and Prowse it was decided - to communicate with headquarters and suggest that visits to Arapuni, Matamata cheese factory and Waharoa dried milk and butter factories be included in the itinerary of the British farmers’ tour, all of which places of interest could be visited ir), one day. Departmental Profits.

“ I am on a party telephone line, j one of eight, and about 3 i miles ; from Tirau, and it costs me £7 17s 6d per year,” said Mr. Dennis, of Tirau, when complaint was made that profits of the department were to be used for increasing wages instead of reducing charges. The discussion arose following a remit from Tauranga as follows : “ That as nothing but temporary and confined benefits can come from increased money wages, and as improvement in general conditions can only come from increase in effective wages, this executive views with concern the Postmaster - General’s recentlyavowed intention to increase wages and salaries instead of reducing costs of services.” The remit was endorsed on the motion of Messrs. Prowse and Gubb.

Tariff Board. “We should have nothing to do with the proposed tariff board,” said Mr. Robinson, “ even though they now propose - to' give ■ assistance to farmers ahd 'have & farmers’ representative oft .ft. Re will not be ap- i pointed by farmers, but by the Government, and he is likely to be as great a menace as the others.” j After little discussion it was decided on the motion of Messrs. Dennis and Nicklin to protest against the establishment of the board. I
