The FASHION REVIEW

by

SUZETTE

The summer sun sends out its clear brilliant rays to all the fashion world and inspires the vogue for colour ; and colour and the summer sun encourage the new sunshine vogue—suntan. Once we shrouded everything from it—ourselves and our possessions. Now the smart thing sponsored by Paris, London, New York and Hollywood (yes, Hollywood is a fashion centre now) is the suntan vogue and sunshine fashions. Yes, more sun, less clothes, this summer. The suntan mode has captured the hearts of all fashions, ex. posing sturdy limbs, throats and backs to the friendly health-giving I sun. Everything is suntan mode. Colours are related to it —styles are I affected by it. j The suntan bathing suit with no back at all is part of the mode. In

order to allow a thorough burning, tennis dresses are now made low at the back. Even the one-piece garments in the corset departments—■ the brassiere and girdle compacts—are made with cutout backs. These thing's are not new, though. They - have been talked about a great deal. There are other things that have to do with the suntan mode that have not received quite as much publicity.

For instance, there is the lovely eggshell crepe with valencon lace trimming that is made to be worn under backless summer dresses. More tailored slips without backs are designed to wear with backless tennis frocks. Striped broadcloth, tub silks and monotone crepe de chine in sets of bandeaux and stepins are designed for the athletic girl. The bandeaux are cut low in the back to accommodate backless dresses. This suntan mode that has caused frocks to cut out their backs and give up their sleeves, that demands colours all its own (cream, yellow, white) to go with a “ gipsy ” face, that requires undies to be briefer and briefer, that makes everyone look as though she had spent the entire winter on the Riviera—is a mode that one surrenders to not only by daytime but at night as well, with a suntan decolletage. The fashion of looking tanned and healthy is decidedly with us, and even if you are not a devotee of the sun it is a simple matter to look as though you were. You will find all the preparations for suntan—powders, lotions, cream—as well as basic preparations that help you to tan evenly, painlessly, quickly, should you find yourself in the sun. But remember, it is smart to be tanned this summer.
