An English visitor has remarked that the inspection of our dairy and meat products “is very rigid, amounting almost to faddism.” That is the sort of back-hand compliment which both producers and Agriculture Department will appreciate. A fad for cleanliness, fanatical zeal obout hygiene, a continuous effort to ensure quality production—these are the right sort of extremes to meet in dairy factories and freezing works. New Zealand produce is under the handicap of having to be carried through the tropics and halfround the world to its principal markets. That is why producers and inspectorate must spare no effort to overlook no detail to maintain the highest standards. Nor will they complain that English readers are being informed of their passion for cleanliness—cleanliness which, in the dairy factory especially is next to godliness.
