DECLUTCHES ITSELF.

GERMAN MOTOR FITTING. I Less Work for Driver. j Simplification of car operating j mamly has been directed towards improving the gear box but inventors j are now paying some attention to j the clutch. I Single-plate disc clutches are reI markably easy and light to operate, but Herr Erdelen, of Berlin, Ger- ' man y, would abolish most of the effort of declutching by using a servo mechanism. He recently patented an invention which causes a motor to declutch itself fromi the transmission.

Because of the enormous power which had to be transmitted, the clutch fitted to Major Segraveis Golden Arrow was too substantial to be moved by foot pressure, and a servo motor was used to unlock its plates ; but Erdelen’s invention employs a different principle. By a clever coupling of the accelerator pedal to a vacuum cylinder, through a control valve which »s { joined to the induction manifold, the I full release of the accelerator dis- I engages the clutch, while acceleration ! of the engine, by decreasing in- j ductive force, allows the clutch to re-engage.
