PUTARURU TOWN BOARD.
ORDINARY MEETING. General Business. The September meeting of the Putaruru Town Board was a short one, the bulk of the evening being spent in committee. Members attending were Messrs. G. G. Griffiths (chairman), J. C. Tomalin, W. Yandle, C. C. Neal, A. E. Barr Brown and K. McDermott. An apology for absence was received from Mr. R. A. Bent. The clerk (Mr. A. H. Dukeson) was in attendance.
Under the new arrangement whereby outward correspondence was numbered only one letter was read and much time was saved by the innovation. Loan Works. The engineer, Mr. M. E. Fitzgerald, forwarded a lengthy letter re loan finances, etc., which was dis-, cussed in committee, and the matter was left with the chairman to report. Power Board.
The chairman reported on the conference with the Power Board, particulars of which have already been published, and it was decided to forward a copy of the agreement to the Public Works Department. P. and T. Pcles. It was decided to again draw the attention of the P. and T. Department to the dangerous nature of the telegraph poles in Overdale road to children and other pedestrians. Heavy Traffic License Pool. A statement was received from the Plamilton Borough Council showing the board’s share of the heavy | traffic license pool as being just over £6. The chairman commented that the amount was small and that some of the figures given for expenditure on roads seemed remarkably high.
Stalls. Applications from the Plunket Socitey and the Library Committee to erect stalls were granted. ' Traffic Signs. The Transport Department forwarded a' circular letter re traffic signs and asked how many were needed within the town district. Mr. McDermott said he would be seeing the Automobile Association’s representative next day and would place various matters before him with a view to finding out what other bodies were doing. It was decided to defer a reply pending a report from Mr. McDermott and the clerk. Building Permits. Building permits for a total value of £177 10s were granted to Messrs. F. C. Flyger, H. W. Lindsey and A. Barcroft.
Ranger. Mr. Yandle reported that Mr. Whittle had agreed to the board’s conditions re pounding stock and had already impounded one animal. The appointment was confirmed. Rubbish Removal. Mr. Yandle reported that with Mr. Bent he had endeavoured to get a carter to remove rubbish, but for various reasons they had not been able to come to any agreement. The chairman remarked that over and above what the board would pay there would be perquisites in sacks, bottles, bones, etc., from the rubbish. Mr. Barr Brown said he had spoken to a man and from what was said the speaker thought the man would undertake the work.
The matter was left with Mr. Barr Brown to engage a man for monthly clearances if possible. Mr. McDermott thought receptacles should be provided in Princes street for rubbish thrown away by pedestrians. At present much ruboish was being swept into the gutter. Mr. Tomalin thought the matter could be deferred for the time being in view of no provision having been made on the estimates. This course was agreed to, and it was decided to write to various shopkeepers who were depositing sweepings in the gutter. Statutory Closing. Mr. A. E. Barr Brown reported that the Employers’ Federation had written to him with regard to protesting against the proposal to close
on Saturday afternoons, and he thought the board should record its protest. ' Mr. Yandle thought a universal half holiday would not make much difference. Mr. McDermott held that so far as small towns were concerned it would affect trade. Mill and other employees could only get in at the end of the week and it would play into the hands of hawkers if shops were closed then. The board decided that Saturday closing would not be in the best interests of the trade of the town. I
