BOBBY CALF INDUSTRY.

; SYSTEM OF GRADING. Objection at Motumacbo. A suggestion that the system of grading bobby calves in operation by the Waikato and Thames Valley Calf By-product Company left much to be desired, was made at the annual ■meeting of suppliers of the Norfolk Dairy Company on Monday.

Mr. W. Stark said he understood ■the calves were 1 ' supposed to be graded, but on the payout slips there ■was no notification of grade. A supplier was, he contended, entitled to know how the calves were graded. JBe suggested that the secretary should write asking the company to State the grade.

Mr Fagan said he had been informed by Mr. S. Lye, manager Of the company, that if a supplier did not hear from the company within several days of delivery of the calves that it could be taken for granted that the calves were first grade. Mr. A. T. Scrivener said there should be at least tljiree grades, one for big, well-nourished calves, one for smaller beasts and one for rejects. At present a farmer was paid no more for a large calf than for a small one. The only discrimination -was that if a calf was under-nourish-ed it was rejected, and the farmer received only the price of the skin less killing charges.

Mr. Ferguson said the bobby calf business was new pract:cally on a true co-operative basis. The South Auckland Dairy Association had given its support to the industry, and had) the right to appoint an auditor to examine the company’s books. Thr manager (Mr. S. Lye) received r fixed sum for every calf and all profits were divided among the suppliers payments being made every month on the basis of cream cheques.
