Matamata 21, Taupiri 6. The Matamata forwards dominated the game throughout and put up a great exhibition of forward play in both the tight and the loose against opponents who battled hard arid never let pp until the final whistle. Altogether it was the best exhibition of forward play given by a Matamata team this season. Fitzgerald was in great kicking form for Matamata, converting three tries, kicking two penalty goals, and missing only one attempt. The game as a whole side having more of the play than the scores would indicate. The blues had the better of the opening exchanges, though playing against a fairly stiff wind. Eagleson r-ot over with a gift try. Grant failed with the kick from the touch line. Taupiri 3, Matamata 0. Sheat made a dash down the right wing following the kick off, hut was pushed out. The blacks forwards then took charge and went three parts of the field. Following two scrums on the blue line the ball was forced. Sutherland and Yanko combined nicely and got to the blue 25, where from a penalty Fitzgerald made the scores even. Matamata 3, Taupiri 3. A fine rush by the black forwards and cuts by Yanko and Ford followed. A penalty for offside wide out saw Fitzgerald again equal to the occasion with a great kick. Matamata 6, Taupiri 3. Kendall shone out for the blues with good defensive kicking, while O’Connor battled hard on the wing and raised the sieges Malligan and Eagleson carried on and from a free Kendall had a shot which skimmed the posts. The blacks returned with short rushes and the hall screwed out to Lornie. Bragg bustled the winger and kicked over the line. Following fast, he missed the ball with his dive, and two defenders also overran. The ball bounced back to Bragg, who was sitting on the ground, for the winger to score a humorous and lucky try. Fitzgerald converted with a great kick. ' Matamata 11, Taupiri 3. The blues kept at it and Grant had a shot which fell short. On defence Yanko put in a long kick which found a gap. Scotty Hill followed at top speed and caught the full-back. Other blacks joined in and the ball went to the 25 line. Hawke I
picked up and sent Ford away. The latter served Bragg, who showed pace to score between the posts. Fitzgerald again converted. Matamata 16, Taupiri 3. The Matamata forwards were excelling themselves, every man being up. Following a kick by Sutherland, Hawke and S. Hill bustled three blues on defence for Hill to pick up and ground the ball. Fitzgerald again converted. Matamata 21, Taupiri 3. The blues rushed to the attack from the restart and looked likely to score when Fitzgerald dived at their feet and saved pluckily. Awarded a free near touch, Grant took the kick and landed a good goal. Taupiri 6, Matamata 21.
