A farmer in the Whariti district, near Woodville, had a surprise recently. He was going over his farm inspecting his sheep when his dog drove a strange bird from the fern. He captured it and discovered that it was a kiwi. After satisfying himself that it was not wounded he released the bird and it ran back into the fern. This is said to be the first occasion upon which a live kiwi has been seen in the Woodville district.
