N.Z. FARMERS’ UNION.

MATAMATA BRANCH. The ordinary meeting of the Matamata branch of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union was held on Monday, Mr. T. H. Prowse presiding. Rise in Timber. Reporting on the Rotorua conference, the secretary, Mr. A. J. Tong, stated that Mr. Melrose had pointed out there had been a rise in the price of timber. The provincial secretary had been asked to report on the matter.

Mr. G. H. Seed stated that there had been a rise which was mostly brought about by the new system of classification. Fencing battens had gone up 2s per 100. Mr. Rollett stated that years ago they only charged for what was ordered, no matter what they sent. Now they charged for what was sent and not what was ordered. If lengths of 10ft Gin were sent they charged for lift lengths.

Mr. Seed further stated that if timber was ordered from Putaruru it was charged as from Mamaku. The chairman said the secretary would probably communicate the result of his investigations before the next meeting, when the subject could be dealt with. The discussion then dropped. The meeting afterwards tackled land settlement and protective problems and little general business was transacted.
