POSITION REMAINS TRE SAME.

ARAPUNI SPILLWAY. Rumour Still Busy. The recent developments in regards the spilway at Arapuni has given renewed interest to the works from a scenic point of view, and during the past few days hundreds of visitors from as far afield as Auckland have visited the works. On Sunday all roads led to Arapuni, and the falls certainly present an aweinspiring sight well worth seeing. There is nothing new to report in regards the actual erosion. The Department have the position well in hand, and anyone visiting the works would not by appearances judge that there is anything amiss. Rumour is still busy as to the number of men likely to be put on .vithin the next few days, but official confirmation of this step is lacking. Responsible people in Arapuni (outside official circles) are somewhat inJignant at the scare attitude adopted by certain papers and they in common with the Public Works Department deprecate the alarmist reports. The heavy rain experienced over a week ago added to the seriousness of the position, but with fine weather and the fact that the second turbine vill soon be in operation, together with other precautionary steps that •’re being taken, will relieve the tension.

Even though the number of men put on falls far short of the hundreds that exist in the minds of alarmists, yet it is a fact that even the increased number means that Arapuni has gained a new lease of life, and as one resident put it: “ It’s an ill wind that blows nobody any good.”
