SUNRISE ON THE MOON.

MOVING PICTURES TAKEN. What is considered an unusual experiment in astronomy was carried < n at Pr.nceton, New Jersey (U.3.A.), when motion pictures of sunrise on the moon were successfully recorded on fi ms. John Q. Stewart, associate professor of astronomical physics at Princeton University, has announced the results of the work.

The device used consists of a small motion picture camera with a 10m llimeter film, and a special electric motor. This was hooked on to the eyep.ece of the telescope by means of an aluminium frame. The pictures were taken at the slow rate of one every six seconds, or 100 times s ower than the usual rate. When the pictures are projected the suu rises 100 times faster than normal.

One film shows the giant crater, Copernicus, while the mountain walls w'hich form the c rcie of this crater are slightly visible on the screen. Calculations have put the d.ameto-r of the crater at 56 miles.

| The sunri. e line of the moon travels Across its surface at the slow rate cf nine miles an hour, at the equator, which, contrasts w.th a corresponding speed on earth of more than IC9J m: es an hour (says the Christian Science Monitor). High peaks on the moon a*-e ’Humiliated six heurs before the glow cf the sun’s rays ha-, d appeared from the neighbouring plan.
