MATAMATA COUNTY COUNCIL.
AUGUST MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Matamata County Council was attended at Tirau on Friday by Crs. J. W. Anderson, chairman (Tirau), J. Bruce (Karapiro), W. A. Wilson (Matamata), K. S. Cox (Tokoroa), W. 11. Allen (Okoroire), p. Dee (Te Poi), G. Middleton (MaUngatautari) and A. Morriss (Putaruru). Also in attendance were Messrs. C. F. E. Barton (clerk) and M. E. Fitzgerald (engineer).
Tapui Block. The Minister of Lands, Hon. G. W. Forbes, in acknowledging the request of adjacent settlers to a block of Government land in the Tapui and Te Pae-o-Turawarq, blocks for protection from the spread of ragwort, stated that the department was inquiring into tfie best method of dealing with this land, and in that connection the position with regard to noxious weeds would receive due consideration. Cr. Allen : They have get a problem. The letter was received. Highways.

The Main Highways Board wrote 5 that it had been found necessary to postpone consideration of the declaration of additional* main highways * owing to the fact that district coun- * cils had disregarded the recommendation made to them by the board. District councils had been asked to f notify any adjustments considered ! necessary and were advised that the board might consider the declaration of a limited mileage. This circular had been totally /./disregarded and wholesale recommendations for new highways had been made. The total mileage recommended was over 2000 j miles, or approximately 60 per cent. ' of the mileage of secondary highways. Even if the board was in a j position to consider making further declarations it would Dot be in a position to adopt the whole or even any substantial part of the recommendations made. i Cr. Anderson said he thought they had gone pretty strong for highways near Auckland and that was why he had put forward the Horahora road * a£ he did. The District Council had thrown out about 50 per cent, of the applications after various councils had withdrawn s.pme of their applications. * The letter was received. (Petrol Pump. Rose Bros. Ltd... asked for permission to erect a petrol bowser outside their Okoroire store. —Granted subject, to usual conditions. Kerbing Wanted. Mr. J. Keane, Tirau, advised the * council that of late fast motor traffic had been passing close to his bar j entrance and he desired the council to define the footpath and construct J a kerbing of which he would pay a reasonable proportion, s The matter was left in the hands [ of the riding member and engineer i with power to act. Water Pipe. Mr. Chas. Musker, Tirau, wrote asking for permission to lay a three-quarter-inch water pipe under the Rotorua road opposite his homestead.—Granted subject to engineer’s supervision. Ngaroma Apiary. Mr. E. R. Clark, apiarist, Ngaroma, wrote in reply to the council’s letter re clearing weeds from a re- , serve that he was uncler the impression that his obligation in this respect referred only to the quarter acre used as an apiary site. If the council expected the whole area to be cleared then he had failed in his duty and would remove his hives during the month of August.—Received. license. Alfred Sloper, Tokoroa, applied to the council for a slaughterhouse license.—Approved.
