PUTARURU-TAUPO ROAD.
LETTER FROM TAUPO.
Council Urges T.T.T. Line. The Taupo Road Board wrote to the Matamata County Council at Friday’s meeting, enclosing a copy of a leiter that had been written to the Main Highways Board relative to the closing of portion of the PutaruruTaupo main road. The letter pointed out that it was a serious thing for the Jorry owners, but the Road Boar;! recognised the County Council’s difficult position, and the Tatter body was not blamed for their action. The viewpoint adopted by the Road Board was that the closure of a main road to heavy traffic, particularly a road that was not a competitor with, but a feeder to, the railway, was to be deplored from the national viewpoint. It was suggested that some method of giving financial aid for the immediate repair of the portion of the road closed might be given either to the County Council or in some manper to be decided on. jj
The letter to the Main Highways Board, a copy of which was attached to the above letter, was in similar terms, pointing out the seriousness of the position, in preventing the transportation of posts from the Taupo and Oruanui districts to the rail at Putaruru. It was also pointed out that the closing of the Toad prevented the Waikato farmers from obtaining posts at a season when they were wanted. The chairman: There is no great I exception which could be taken to the letter. They appreciate our point. Cr. Cox: We should ask them to push for the completion of the negotiations with the T.T.T. Company for the carriage of posts and goods, as it would save thousands of pounds on road maintenance. He moved in this direction.
The chairman stated that the Mangaiti deviation was the portion of the road which had given out.
Cr. Middleton seconded the resolution, which was carried unanimously.
