THE PUTARURU PRESS. 'Phone 28 P.O. Box 44 Office Oxford Place THURSDAY, AUGUST 15, 1929. A KNOTTY PROBLEM.

THE question of the stoppage of heavyweight lorries on the Taupo road south of Tokoroa is one of serious moment to Putaruru, but it is also one that presents a serious problem that should be approached not merely in a parochial spirit but with a true appreciation of the difficulties that XaCe ihe Matamata County Council and the lorry owners. It is regrettable that the latter should be placed in the position in which they find themselves, for no doubt they have gone to considerable expense in making provision for the carrying out of their contracts. The loss to Putaruru is also a serious one, but, as one of the leading business men pointed out, it was hardly a fair thing to blame the County Council offhand, for the latter body had the users of the road as a whole to consider. It seems unfortunate that the whole road has to be subject to the fifth-class if only a portion of some five or six miles is responsible for this grading. Surely the Main Highways Board, if advised of the position, would undertake the placing of this portion jof the road in such order as to permit of lorries weighing at least four tons laden operating and thus overcoming the difficulties.

As before stated, the position is a serious one for Putaruru, and a solution that would ensure fair treatment for the lorry owners and at the same time ensure the road being kept in a satisfactory state for all users thereof would be welcome.

The matter was before the Matamata County Council at its last meeting in the form of a letter from the Taupo Road Board and which the chairman of the County Council (Mr. J. W. Anderson) stated was a fair one. The Road Board stated that it would be willing to assist in any possible way in having the road put in order, and something should be done in the matter.

Matters that result in an impasse can often be cleared up by a conference, and we suggest that such a gathering should be held at which the County Council, lorry owners, Putaruru; Chamber of: .Cnmmerqei and Taupo Road Board could be represented. 5 The suggestion?’ik 5 put forward., in desire that a way .put compatible ’ •with, the ‘ interest: pf all should be found..’ <H
