Waotu.

Benefit Dance. The Waotu Hall on Friday night was the scene of a jolly plain and fancy dress dance, the function being given by the employees of the Pine and Pulp Company in aid of the earthquake relief funds. . The hall was artistically decorated, coloured streamers, Chinese lanterns and palms being used most effectively. The floor was in good order, and excellent music was supplied by Mr. H. George’s orchestra. Mr. R. Barnett made an excellent M.C. Dancers were present in large numbers from various parts of the district. Mrs. R. T. Smith and Mr. J. W. Barr Brown judged the fancy dresses, and they were faced with no small task.

A special prize, donated by the Pine and Pulp Company, vas awarded to Miss Straubell for the character of “ Grandpa,” her partner, Miss Jones, “ Grandma,” receiving a highly commended.

For the most original costume (ladies), Miss J. Barnett, as “Sylvia Starch,” was the winner. In the men’s section, Mr. Clinton Jones, as a ,‘ 1929 Flapper,” romped home an easy winner.

A number of novelty dances were included, Miss R. Mita and Mr. Saunders winning the Monte Carlo, whilst I the spot waltz was won by Miss J. | Barnett and Mr. F. E. Hosking. A cake guessing competition was won by Miss R. Mita. A first-class supper was provided, and as the dancers left the hall in the early hours they voted it as one of the jolliest dances of the season. Scholz. Cowbov: Duff, Day; F. Batley, Pirate; C. Jones, 1929 Flapper: D. McDonald, Black and White Whisky; J. Gale, French Professor: Mastchin, Post Office; J. Miller, Punch.
