LOCAL AND GENERAL.
Mr. J. B. Wheeler, of Auckland, is at present relieving Mr. G. H. Tanner, of the Putaruru railway staff. Mr. C. T. ‘ Finnagan, of Mamaku, has replaced Mr. T. Lindsay on the local railway staff. Miss J. I. L. Cowie, 8.A., who has been relieving assistant in the secondary department of the Putaruru District High School, has accepted a position at Kaihu. Mr. Ces. Badeley, a member of the 1924 All Black Rugby football team that toured England, was a visitor to Putaruru last week. Mr. Richard Rolfe sustained a broken collar-bone during a football match between Arapuni and Te Aroha, played at the former place during the week-end. Messrs. J. S. Gates, sign posting patrol, and N. E. McAdam, Waikato patrol of the Auckland Automobl-i Association, were in Putaruru last week overhauling the signposts In the district. The bad bend on the Putaruru-Lichfield road, to which attention was recently drawn, is to have “ dangerous crossing ” signs erected.
“ Modern tendencies in French music ” was the subject that occupied the attention of the Putaruru circle of the W.E.A. box scheme on Thursday night. Members met at Mr. and Mrs. R. G. Hutton’s residence. Mrs,, Tulloch led the discussion, and in addition to illustrative gramophone records, Mrs. Alcorn sang several songs that were greatly appreciated. A short one-act play was acceptably read by Miss McLaren and Mr. Marshall. Mr. and Mrs. Hutton entertained the party to supper.
Weather permitting, the Putaruru Brass Band will play a programme in Princes street on Saturday, July 27, commencing at 7 p.m.
