SUZETTE

The Breath of Spring

Spring is in the air. There goes a bumble bee, foolish fellow ; now a delicious warm breeze. Soon there will be a drift of blossom. We seem to sense the excitement of the grow- | ing things on the earth. And we are i excited, too. It needs only the age- | old miracle of spring to put a lilt in our step, a song in our heart, but alas, our clothes—so heavy, so stuffy do they become. Just what are the breezes saying? Listen—sleeveless frocks with shoulder capes and berthas—cape effects in light tweed coats cape sleeves, cape backs, cape wings—jackets for every type of frock handkerchief ' linen, for blouses—printed ginghams with ' dark grounds, piques, linens, petal frocks of fluttering chiffon—longer afternoon frocks linen-like straw for hats, smooth straws, gay plaid or check straws, suntan backs, pyjamas. Doesn’t it all sound exciting? : Who would be a man, I ask you? ’ Speaking of pyjamas, the vogue is growing so much that even conservatives are adopting thein in lieu of negligee for beach wear. More—the pyjama now goes to breakfast, to bridge and to the informal dinner. (Heaven forbid that any Victorian die-hard shall read this. I am not ' vindictive by nature, nor have I broken the eighth commandment ere this, but you had to know.) How do you like the sound of this hostess pyjama ? The trousers,, which are gracefully wide round the ankles (rather a sea-going air), are in red silk crepe, while the bodice section is fnade of a huge square of white chiffon with hand block and floral motif in block. Longer afternoon frocks the “ fantail silhouette ” (I wonder what the fantails said when thev heard—they’ll be invited everywhere this

season I expect) is an interesting version of the lengthened skirt. This may be achieved by circular cuts, pleats, godets and exaggerated, may develop into a short train ; graceful indeed, but an ominous sign of the floorward movement in skirts. Two colour combinations for the spring—a cardigan and skirt with a strong note of orange flashing out from pullover and scarf, preferably a good wide stripe ; or a brown suit with yellow crepe blouse and scarf, and felt hat with brown crown and yellow brim. Like them ? And one for summer—a white skirt, a yellow and white sweater, a white hat and yellow scarf.

Of course you know that sunburn will be-worn for- sleeves this summer, and that most of the frocks will I have sun backs, but perhaps we are looking too far ahead. Undeniably “ the cape’s the thing for spring.” It does hav6 a softening Influence —one of the features perhaps that have caused facetious ones to remark that “ the modern girl, is losing her“manhood.” A tripletiered cape in soft blue face cloth with a large shoulder flower is one of the smartest modes I have seen so far this season. If only there was time to describe in detail the lovely blossomy chiffons and prints, newly - opened leaves, sprays of hawthorn, pussy willow. Nature is very wonderful. It almost seems that the fabric artists and manufacturers are more wonderful. 1 But a little patience and you will I surely see these things. | How do you think you will like I wearing lace stocking lace at the ■ knee and at the heels ? As Icr.g as they do not nrr dude elbow mittens I am all for them.
