CHAMBER OF COMMERCE.
MONTHLY MEETING. The monthly meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce was held in the Oddfellows’ Hall on Monday. Mr. J. W. Barr Brown presided over the meeting, which was adversely affected by the weather conditions. Apologies for absence were received from Messrs. Sneddon, Barnett and Reid.
Train Alterations. A letter was received from the manager of railways declining to accede to the chamber’s suggestion of advertising train alterations. Mr. Lochhead moved that the letter be acknowledged and that if the department was sincere in its desire for business it should listen to helpful suggestions from business organisations. The motion was carried. Courthouse for Putaruru. The chamber’s request for a monthly Court sitting and the erection of a Courthouse produced a reply from the Minister of Justice agreeing that 'a Courthouse was needed and justified by the business. The Minister advised that the Courthouse would be erected next year provided the volume of business was maintained. Justices of the Peace.
Mr. Clinkard, M.P., replied to trie chamber’s request for appointment of justices of the peace in the district, advising that only one appointment could be made meanwhile. The chamber had replied suggesting that Mr. Allwood, of Lichfield, be appointed. The- chairman suggested that it be pointed out to Mr. Clinkard that Mr. Griffiths had left Putaruru and that there was therefore a vacancy here which should be filled. Checking Speeding. In reply to the suggestion that steps be taken to check speeding, the Matamata County Council wrote that the inspector took all steps possible to deal with the nuisance. Forestry Operations.
Messrs. Melville, Ferner and Brown wrote in reference to the operations of N.Z. Perpetual .Forests Ltd. that the company was writing at length. The letter appears in another coulmn.
Desultory discussion ensued in which it was pointed out that no attacks had been made on N.Z. Perpetual Forests ; in fact the company’s stated attitude toward farming had been approved. ,
It was decided that the letter be referred to the Farmers’ Union for its comments on the farming phases. Mr. Spear moved that a reply be sent to N.Z. Perpetual Forests thanking the company for its instructive letter and stating that no attack had been made on the company. Daily Mail for Taupo.
The Taupo Road Board enclosed a copy of a letter sent by the board tc the secretary of the Post and Telegraph Department asking for a daily mail service from Putaruru. The board requested the aid of the chamber in obtaining this service. Mr. Neal moved that the chamber support the board in its request. This was seconded by Mr. Lochhead and carried. Control of Cemetery. The chairman reported briefly on the condition of the cemetery / ar.d stated that such improvement had been effected as limited funds would allow. Mr. Neal suggested that it might be advisable for the control of the cemetery to be vested in the Town Board. Mr. Benton moved that the chamber approach the Town Board with a view to the' board taking over the control of the cemetery, and failing that, that the board be requested tc subsidise the funds, subject always to the approval of the present trustees.
The motion was seconded by Mr Simpson and carried.
