TIRAU BRIDGE.
AND LEVEL CROSSING. Very Dangerous. r Mr. W. Hetherington, Tirau, waited on the Matamata County Council on Friday and asked if something could be done to clear the trees on the roadside near the Tirau bridge. They were a danger at night, through hanging over. As many as 714 cars passed through in a day, and the bridge was a death trap as the trees hid the view of the railway. People had to turn at both . Bads to get on to the bridge. In his opinion there should be no trees within five chains of the bridge. A j few years ago other trees had to be felled in other places, but this was a worse case. ' Cr. Allen ; stated the trees were now in a bad state and liable to blow over. There was a compulsory atop notice at the crossing, and he thought the- trees should be cut if they could lie utilised. r Cr. Dee thought a light might solve the problem. Mr. Hetherington stated there ■were already two lights which were - hadly placed and were of no use except for people’s gateways. On the motion of the chairman it was decided that the riding member and engineer report on the trees. Cr. Bruce: Would the overhead i bridge affect the position? Mr. Hetherington: It will make matters ten times worse. The engineer explained that the bridge was built before the two-way policy of the Highways Board was introduced. Were it built now it ■would be made broader. The overbead bridge was held 'up in the Weantime. Going down hill was most 'dangerous, but the notice had been placed on the other side. ...Discussion then dropped.
