THE PUTARURU PRESS. Phone 28 P.O. Box 44 Office Oxford Place THURSDAY, JULY 11, 1929. A REGRETTABLE ACTION.
ONCE again vve find ourselves in disagreement with the chairman of the Putaruru Town Board, as instanced in the letter which appears in our Public Opinion columns today. In the first place we take strong exception to the statement that wfe cast a slur on the gentlemen comprising the board. We wrote what we considered and still consider to be well-merited criticism of the board’s action, and the personal qualities of the gentlemen were not questioned. Then again, we fail to see that we lauded one member of the board to the exclusion of others. We used his remarks as a peg, and the gentleman in question has to stand the criticism as well as the other members of the board, for the article was condemnatory of the board as a whole. Then again the mere fact of two members giving personal donations is beside the question.
We sincerely hope for our common humanity’s sake that the chairmans ideas in matters of this 'sort will never find common acceptance, for it was not with feelings of charity that the people of New Zealand (aye, and in other parts of the world, too) and local bodies rushed forward to help, but in the spirit of one touch of nature that makes the whole world kin. We are glad to learn that it was not parsimony that caused the board to .act as it did. It is useless entering into a discussion on the other parts of the letter, but again we reiterate our belief that the Town Board acted wrongly in taking the stand it did. We are content to leave it to our readers to judge. While we do not credit the chairman with saying anything in the following direction we would like to make a statement to the effect that we shall at all times necessary criticise not only the Town Board but any other local body, and in doing so we will be voicing our own opinions and not those of any particular section of the community. Our aim is to make the Putaruru Press'a live journal with the interests of the town and district always at heart.
