VIOLENT STORM.
EFFECT AT TIRAU. Heavy Damage Caused. A violent storm, which caused great damage, was experienced at Tirau on Tuesday morning at about 10.30 a.m. Although of only a few minutes’ duration, the visitation was the worst ever experienced in the district. The track of the storm seemed to be only about two chains wide and anything in line suffered. Mr. J. Stewart’s residence suffered considerably, having half the roof blown away, some sheets of iron being found fully half-a-mile from the house. A piece of timber from a newly-erected cowshed some distance away was hurled right through the weather boards and into the kitchen. Windows were broken and the power lines came down, making the fence “ live.” Mrs. Stewart and a farm helper both received severe shocks, while quite a number of fowls were electrocuted. A large shed on Mr. Jordan’s property, filled with baled hay, was lifted bodily and turned completely mound, while another shed was blown down. Plantations of trees look as if bushmen had cut a track of a couple of chains wide through them.
