WRONGLY-NAMED CHURCH.
For 70 years the parish church of Myland, Colchester, Essex, has been known as the St. Michael and All Angels. In recognition of this title thene in the chancel no fewer than 16 figures of the angels and four texts about them.
It has now been d’soovered (says the London “Daily Mail” that this inclusion of angels is erroneous. The old parish church, which was replaced by the present one in 1854, was dedicated to St Michael the Archangel, and the consecration sentence of the present church fixes its designation as the Church of St. Michael.
Oddly enough, however, and probably owing to the error of some clerk, the deed which substituted one church for the other misnames both churches as St. Michael and All Angels. The old records also give no fewer than five different names to the parish itself, namely, “Mile End,” “Myland,” “My Land,” “Uayland,” and “Miiand.”
