POVERTY IN MORRINSVILLE.
A DISTRESSING CASE. Charitable Aid Withdrawn. A distressing case of poverty in Morrinsville was brought under the notice of the Morrinsville Borough Council at Thursday evening’s meeting. The case was of an elderly couple both of whom are incapacitated. The man was in receipt of an old age pension of £3 15s 5d a month, and from this he paid 17s a week in rent. His earnings did not exceed 10s a week. Some years ago the man and his wife each received 10s a week in charitable aid from the Waikato Hospital Board. The man went into hospital for treatment, and on being discharged found his allowance from the board had been stopped. The means of livelihood of the couple was the 10s received by the wife from the board, which was supplied in the way of groceries by a local firm; also the man’s pension. The firm had been advised a few days ago that the charitable allowance to the wife had now been stopped, and no more groceries were to be supplied. Strong exception was taken by the council to the board’s action, and it was decided to demand an explanation through the council’s representative.
