Commandant W. Atkinson, of the Salvation Army, Prankton junction, is on an official visit to Putaruru.

Mr. Dixon, agricultural instructor under the Auckland Education Board, paid an official visit to the Putaruru High School last week.

Mr. K, D. Morton has been appointed a member of the Putaruru Rugby Union vice Mr. Dawson, who has resigned. The Putaruru Rugby Union has lost the services of two valued members, Messrs. McNamara and Dawson. of Arapuni, who have left the district.

Mr. H. V. Iverr, who has been in charge of Messrs. Bray and Company’s construction works on the Arapuni road, returned to Auckland on Tuesday night.

The Putaruru District High School secondary department has received an invitation from the Rotorua High School to visit the latter place, and it is proposed to take .advantage of the invitation on Friday week.

The work of re-forming and bitumenising the Arapuni. road from just outside the Putaruru town district area onwards has been completed. Messrs. Bray and Company, of Auckland, were the contractors.

At the meeting of the Putaruru Rugby Union on 'Tuesday evening tentative arrangements were made for matches with Afforestation, Taupo and Matamata, all games to be played at Putaruru.

The June issue of the New Zealand Railways Magazine is of more than usual interest. It contains an interesting article on the Mamaku plateau and one equally interesting on the publicity branch of the department. The illustrations are also up to the usual high standard.

The gift of a football to the Putaruru school boys has been made by Mr. W. Burgess, cf Ngatira, and appreciation of his generous and kindly action was expressed at the meeting of the Putaruru District High School Committee on Wednesday evening. The secretary was authorised to convey this appreciation to Mr. Burgess.

Recently the attention of the Auckland Automobile Association was drawn to an S bend near Lichfield and the suggestion was made that it was of such a nature that it should be signposted. Word has been received from the association’s touring officer, Mr. Champtaloup, to the effect that he was in touch with the Matamata County Council suggesting to that body that an improvement in the alignment of the road should be made, which would be of more value to motorists.

At an enthusiastic meeting held on Monday evening it was decided to form a Putaruru Association Football Club. Mr. Victor Helljngs presided and Mr. J. Dewse was elected secretary pro tern. An offer from Mr. Hellings to donate the jerseys, shorts and stockings was accepted with thanks. A trophy has been promised, and there is every reason to expect that the club will be successfully launched, while there are prospects of a union being formed, for it was stated that four or five teams would be available.

At the meeting of the Putaruru District High School Committee on Monday evening the headmaster, Mr. E. G. Hutton, informed the committee that he had been asked by the Auckland Education Board to provide an extensive plan of the school grounds with the various drains, etc., marked thereon, and he sought the co-operation of the committee in connection therewith. A brief discussion followed, one member characterising the request “as a piece of cheek.” It was stated that tjie board’s architect had the plans in his office, and the headmaster was advised to write to the board to this effect.

The activities of the Putaruru branch of the W.E.A. have been increased by the adoption of the box scheme. ' The first meeting was held at Mrs. Alcorn’s residence, where Galsworthy’s play “ Escape ” was read, Mrs. J. S. Reid acting as leader. On Tuesday evening the circle met at Mr. and Mrs. T. F. Snell’s residence, where the first lecture of the series, “ A Historical Survey of the Nineteenth Century,” was read, Mr. R. G. Hutton acting as leader. In both instances the discussions were most interesting. Supper was provided by Mesdames Alcorn and Snell respectively.

A prolonged earthquake was experienced at Putaruru at 10.23 on Monday morning. It was felt most by those who were indoors, especially by those engaged in clerical work, for the desks, etc., began to sway backwards and forwards, causing most people to momentarily wonder if they were being overtaken by faintness. Electric globes swung with great violence but no damage was done. The motion was semicircular. and had it been the usual type of earthquake there would have great damage inflicted, for ’t lasted fully half a minute. At Waotu. where it was felt to the "ome aas in Putaruru, a resident timed it to last or.e minute. It was not felt at the local school, the children were out in the play ground.
