Rating System. Unimproved Value Favoured. In furtherance of the efforts of the Putaruru branch of the Farmers’ Union to create interest in the rating on unimproved value system a meeting was held at Puketurua on Thursday evening, when despite the rain a good meeting eventuated. Mr. Goebel was elected to the chair and briefly introduced Mr. J. R. O. Lochhead, of Putaruru, who gave an
address on the rating on unimproved value system along lines reported in last week’s Press. At the close of the address Mr. Barnett said he believed that the system would be the means of breaking up the large estates but from his own experience, which he gave to the meeting and which revealed astounding anomalies, he doubted if it would benefit him and others like him. Mi. Rose moved that the meeting express its favour of the rating on unimproved value system. Mr. Barnett moved an amendment in favour of the capital value system. On a show of hands being taken the motion was declared carried by five to two. On the motion of Mr. Peters it was resolved that the Putaruru branch of the Farmers’ Union go into -the question of valuation on the unimproved values. Mr. A. R. Vosper, president of the Putaruru branch, said they would do their best, and he assured the farm-' ers present that the union was always willing to work for the farmers, whose interests made it imperative that they should stand together.
Hearty votes of thanks were accorded Messrs. Lochhead and Vosper for their attendance.
