THE AUCKLAND SPEECH.
As to what the Government has done and will do in the way of constructive endeavour the Prime Minister was far from clear. Pie is. determined, he says, to go on with the completion of main railway lines, and in this connection he made some threatening references to motor transport. Pie will also carry out some undefined scheme of land settlement. In the meantime the net result of six months of Liberal administration, so far as it can be picked out from the speech, is that the Government has abolished the c.o.d. parcels system, has “ investigated ” railway construction, and has added 42 to the number of prospective settlers. This is not a very impressive record of work, even standing by itself. When it is compared with what the United Party promised it is even less than that. But what is more important is the fact that the Prime Minister seems unwilling or unable to attack the root causes of our present discomforts.—Christchurch Press.
