VOGUES IN JEWELS.
Jewellery is definitely back again. “ Beauty unadorned is best ” we said during the war, and I think we believed it, too. But new lives, new laughter, new loves demanded their bright accompaniments, and so the advent of pearls—symbolic of tears—marked our emergence from the shadow.. And now we scintillate, twinkle and clang in the most thrilling semibarbaric fashion. Bracelets of wood clank rythmieally against each other, I rhinestones shoot gleams bluer than those from the diamonds in a Sultan’s turban, and gold and silver | “ slave ” necklets encii’cle many j graceful throats. i There are modern influences at work as well. You who are blonde, here is a necklace that combines iris-blue beads with rhinestone rondels, and attaches two blue felt flow- i ers on the left side. And you who are “ somewhat Oriental,” listen to this necklace, which has a strand of shining black beads with oxblood coral wired at intervals to it in the manner of curled leaves. Carved copper, suntan, pearls, leather thongs and gold, multiple strands with long showers of them hanging down in front are some new types. The large silver and cameo brooches of the nineties are being resuscitated and reproduced. It is so easy now to obtain a piece of jewellery for each costume, and so inexpensive, such a plethora of semi-precious stones is there—carneTion, crystal, jade, lapis-lazuli, turquoise, topaz. Paris is showing quantities of wooden jewellery which will be most easily welcomed au Printemps. It combines so readily with coloured beads and is as light as sea foam. It will be interesting to watch the development of the wood vogue. Bag frames and umbrella, handles have adopted it already.
Have you seen the new fabric hafid bags?. In novelty woollen fabrics for sports, in .crepe de chine, brocade, tapestry, straw and crepe for afternoon wear, they foreshadow spring. Keep this in mind—an envelope made of awning-striped linen for your spring suit. The double strap handle is considered most convenient for sports or travel just now. Chintz flowers to enliven your costume in pale rose, yellow and blue with shining patent leather leaves. Contrasting shades, or the twotone theme, is conspicuous here. For sports, tweed straw clusters are ever so effective. They have bound edges, and bright, solid, coloured centres. In the spring to get the. correct “ colour accent ” you must add a bunch of “ golden daffodils.” Meantime draw your furs closer.
