WHEN FIRES OCCUR.
I . It is a very wise precaution for motorists always to carry an efficient fire-extinguisher, properly charged. If I the engine catches fire while under . way on the road, turn the petrol off if the tap is accessible, but leave the engine running. Motor spirit is highly inflammable; a back-fire, a naked light, a burning match, a spark from pipe or cigarette may start a conflagration even by contact with petrol vapour from a receptacle some little distance away. If a fire occure, smother it at once with a sack J or cloth (obviously not oil-soaked), I
sand, earth, or, if available, with fire-extinguisher. Use of water may make matters worse. Don’t allow old oil to accumulate, nor leave oil-soak-ed rags lying about.
