ACCOMMODATION REFUSED.
♦ I CASE DISMISSED. : Not a Serious Breach. « A. G. Leggatt, the licensee of the Putaruru Hotel (Mr. E. Roe), pleaded guilty before Mr. S. L. Paterson, S.M., at the Magistrate’s Court on Thursday to a charge of refusing to supply travellers with accommodation when same was available. Constable Murphy briefly outlined the facts, which were to the effect that three people called after midnight and in reply to a request for accommodation were told that none was available. A complaint was l made and when interviewed Leggatt admitted his error, saying that he was not well. Constable Murpnjr said that Leggatt was one of the best hotelkeepers in New Zealand, and he had never been in trouble be-, fore. * Mr. Roe said that the circumstances were that his client was not well at the time, and getting out of " bed half asleep he thought that the three man looked suspicious characters and refused them rooms. There were one or two bedrooms vacant, but some were kept for regular week-end customers. On thinking the matter over his client had realised that he had not done the right thing, and had written an aolpogy to one of the men. He had been 11 years in the trade and had never been before the court before. Mr. Paterson, in dismissing the charge under section 92 of the Justice of Peace Act, agreed that it was not a serious breach, but Leggatt would be ordered to pay £1 towards the public account, together with 10s costs.
