PUTARURU TOWN BOARD.

MONTHLY MEETING. Many Matters Discussed. The monthly meeting of the Putaruru Town Board was held on Monday evening, when there were present: Messrs. G. G. Griffiths (chairman), Bent, McDermott, Neal and Duke son (town clerk). Motor Taxation. The Prime Minister (Sir Joseph Ward) acknowledged receipt of the j board’s protest against any reduc- | tion in motor taxatioifj especially in I connection with heavy traffic fees. The Prime Minister stated that the protest had been noted, and referred to the Minister for Transport for his attention and consideration, when the question of the taxation of motor vehicles was under consideration. —Received. Hospital Levy. The Waikato Hospital Board inthe board that the levy for the year 1929-30 was £l3B 9s lid, to to be paid in four instalments in June, September, December and March.—lt was stated that there was an increase of £5 10s Id over the levy of last year. Culvert. Mr. N. A. Ashford advised the board that he had instructed the tenants of his property not to cross the footpath in front of the house thereon with vehicles.—Received. Access to House.

Mr. R. Hutton wrote to the effect that he understood that the board intended to give access to his house by means of steps, to be placed at the end of the property near Kay’s, and protesting against this being done, as a path across the front lawn would interfere with his privacy and convenience.—The board decided to inform the writer that it had no knowledge of the intention to do as suggested. W.E.A. The Putaruru branch of the W.E.A. wrote asking for a donation towards the Dominion funds of the organisation, pointing out that special provision had been made by the Government for such donation, which are subsidised by the Government to the extent of £1 for £l. Mr. Neal, in reply to the chairman, said that a course of six lectures were to be given in Putaruru, and the chairman said that if this w - ere so then the movement was worthy of support. He suggested

that the board give the use of the supper room (with the use of heatfree of charge as a donation.— This was agreed to, members all stating that they recognised the worthiness of the W.E.A. movement. ! Use of Supper Room. The local branch of the. W.E.A. applied for the use of the supper room of the Town Hall on alternate Fridays for .three months.—The request was granted, subject to the hall not being required on these nights. Level Crossings. The Railway Department wrote nointing out that the new regulations in reference to railway crossings would come into force on 'June 1, and the Town Board would’ be reSDonsible for the ''erection'’of St. Andrew crossing boards in its area. The chairriian: Another move on 1 e Railway Department’s part to throw things on to the local bodies. It was decided to let the two crossing notices at present in existence remain until further is heard of the matter. Rubbish Depot. Messrs. Hewitt and Reid, on behalf of the Putaruru Building Syndicate, wrote protesting against the proposed use of section 22 and the gravel reserve as a depot for the deposit of rubbish. The letter stated that it would be a menace to health and detrimental to the comfort of the occupants of the nearby houses.

The board decided that if they took notice of such objections thgy -would not be able to get a site for the purposes in Putaruru. Caretaker of Town Hall. There were three applications fpr the position of caretaker of the Town Hall, all at the same price, viz., £4O per year. The board decided to reappoint Mr. McLeod, the present caretaker. It was stated that the present tenders were an advance of £lO on last year.
