THE PUTARURU PRESS. ’Phone 28 P.O. Box 44 Office Oxford Place THURSDAY, MAY 23, 1929. TOWN HALL LOAN PROPOSALS.

“ COMING events cast their shadows ; before," is an old saying, and it is i revived by the references to the proposed Town Hall loan proposals of tne Butagurui Town Board, to which reference was made at the monthly meeting of the Board on Monday. The loan proposals have not yet gone before the Board, so that it is early to enter into great detail as to

the proposals, but several statements were made at the Board meeting that calls for comment. The chairman, in supporting his suggestion that tenders Should be called for the erection of the hall prior to the poll, said that he was positive that the hall could be built at no cost to the ratepayers. No doubt the Board will place this data before the ratepayers prior to the

1 poll; that is, if the Loans Board will i approve of the proposal to borrow | £BOOO for the purpose of building, furnishing, etc., a new town hall.* The chairman’s statement that he personally placed the question of the Town Hall before that of the water scheme seems, on the face of it, a remarkable one to make; but no doubt when the times comes he will be willing to explain as to how he arrives at this conclusion. The question of an adequate water supply in a town is, to our mind, of paramount importance, and far beyond that of a Town Hall.

Mr. McDermott’s suggestion that an alternative proposal to borrow a sum of money to spend on the renovation and alteration of the existing Town Hall, to bring it up to modern requirements, is a wise one, and one that should commend itself to ratepayers, for if Mr. McDermott’s suggestion is put into operation, and it is to be hoped that the legal position will allow of its being done, it will enable the ratepayers to express their opinion as to what they want in the way of hall accommodation in the town. Mr. McDermott is to be commended for making the suggestion. As stated before, it is rather early to enter into a detailed criti cism of schemes that are very much up in the air but lie, lateray-rr would be advisedi to . give the mattei early consideration: : \ .v r
